Phonics
In year 1, all pupils take part in the statutory Phonics Screening test. This assesses the phonic understanding of pupils and their ability to decode words. Children who do not reach the appropriate standard are given targeted support in Year 2 and retests at the end of that year.

Year 2 End of Key Stage 1 assessments
From the academic year 2023 to 2024, there is no longer any statutory requirement for schools to carry out end of KS1 teacher assessment. At Seathorne, Year 2 pupils sit the KS1 SATs (now optional Assessment Tests) in reading and maths. Writing continues to be assessed by our teachers.
The tests are designed to assess progress and attainment of pupils to determine whether they are working at the expected standard for their age (ARE).
